What is the Difference Between High Tensile and Low Carbon Fencing?

Get out and get to work! When it comes to fencing that’s a good place to start. With a little sweat equity, fencing sets boundaries. It keeps animals in and predators out. It can encompass entire ranches or just protect the vegetable patch in the backyard. Whatever it’s needed for, fencing has many uses. That’s why in our Fencing Section we make it easy and break it down for you.

In this guide, we’ll answer questions like what type of fence is best for your animals while explaining what tools you’ll need to get the job done. And, we’ll tackle topics such as spacing and cost. It’s more doable than you think. You’ve got this and we can help.

High tensile fencing products are stronger, lighter, longer lasting, and they cost less. Traditionally, low carbon barbed wire has a breaking strength of around 950 pounds.

Hi everybody. My name's Keith Taylor with Bekaert Corporation. I've been with Bekaert for about 28 years, and we're here partnered with North 40 Outfitters.

What is the difference between low carbon fencing products and high tensile fencing products?

Low Carbon Fencing and High Tensile Fencing Products

Generally, high tensile fencing products are stronger, they're lighter, they're longer-lasting and they will cost less per foot for installation and costs less for maintenance over time. High tensile products, in most cases, come close to doubling the breaking strength of the low carbon products.

The coatings last longer, they're generally a Class 3, or a zinc aluminum coating in Bekaert's case. Class 3 coatings generally last three times as long as the traditional Class 1 coatings. Zinc aluminum coatings will generally give you twice the life expectancy of a Class 3 coating.

High Tensile Barbwire Strength of 1,400 Pounds

So let's just take high tensile barbwire, for example. Traditional low carbon barbwire usually has a breaking strength around 950 pounds. The cattleman line, from Bekaert, actually has a breaking strength of over 1,400 pounds, so therefore it's the strongest, longest lasting barbed wire on the market.
