The Stimulator or Stimi, is a variation from a stonefly pattern called the Sofa Pillow. The Stimulator is an attractor dry fly that is made to represent the stonefly hatches. This fly often also passes as a grasshopper pattern. There is some debate on who originally tied this pattern but the fly, the way we tie it today, was probably tied by Randall Kaufmann who is a well known west coast angler.
