At just 1.6mm diameter and available in stunning colors, mylar cord will not disintegrate or unwrap when the ends split. Wrap around the hook or pull over the hook shank leaving the end strands split apart to look like a tail. You could also use a few strands of marabou on the hook shank then pull the mylar cord over as a body for creating great sand eel patterns.
