Missouri River The weather has been spectacular, and it appears to be staying that way for a while.  While crappy fall weather often means better fall fishing, the nice weather is sure enjoyable. Nymphs You can almost always get them on nymphs, but when it’s bright out in the spring and fall, it can get a bit tough.  Mid-morning is generally good with the scuds, sows, zebras, and small mayfly varietals. Dry dropper in the afternoon is often the best way to deliver your nymph in the low, clear water or even all day.  Tufted Zebras are hard to beat under an indicator fly. Dry Flies The mild weather has the caddis holding on.  They won’t be around much longer, but fish are still seeing them and still eating caddis dries like the hi-vis spent.  If you want to fish a big dry, the October Caddis can bring on some big splashy eats, esp...

Coeur d'Alene River The fishing here has been super good.  Lots of great reports came in from this week and last week.  If the good weather keeps holding out, we will be fishing in mid-November.  However, it looks like we are supposed to be getting some cooler weather and rain soon.  This will be a good thing though.  Some cloud cover and a little rain will bring the blue wing olives out big time along with the mahoganies too.  It will be a shorter window for the hatch, but it should be killer.  As the weather gets colder, the hatches will be shorter lived.  Nymphing in the mornings or streamer fishing will get fish before the hatches happen.  Smaller sculpin patterns stripped quickly off the banks or fast riffles and you should catch some bigger fish.  The October caddis are still out, and fish will look at them most of the da...

Blue lake (Sinlahekin Valley WA) The pressure at the lake has been little to none and that’s too bad cause the fishing has been pretty good. Some nice brown trout have been caught and a fair number of chunky rainbows are showing up as well. There are a number of the area lakes closing at the end of the month, Blue Lake will be one of them. Depending on who I have talked to, I get quite a list of what flies are working. A #16 and #14 chironomid in black or red, black leeches, and buggers are the most common fly patterns being used with success. The browns are averaging right around 18 inches and the average rainbow is coming in around 16 inches. The way the catching is going, double-digit catches seem to be the norm. The phrase gives me the need to recap the past five summers of my life, all of which I spent in the bush of Alaska chasing down salmon, char, and grayling with some really great folks. Missouri River The outlook is for lots of sunshine and mild temperatures.  The weather is almost too good. Great for going fly fishing.  Not as good from the action side, but fall fishing is always pretty good, so no one should be complaining.  I’m sure we’ll see some cold and darker days soon enough. Nymphs If you like to get out early, you’ll likely do best running longer leaders and fishing scuds, sows, and larger attractor nymphs. As the day progresses, you can run short or even get stealthy with a dry dropper.  Try an October caddis or big orange stimi for your dry and drop a little bwo, zebra or soft hackle off the back. Clearwater River (ID) The current flow is 3,260 cfs at Spaulding. Anglers are reporting that the fish they’re catching this year are big. If you have wanted to catch a Big B, this could be your year to have a good chance at doing that. Fish are still being taken on traditional feather and hair wing flies. Intruders on a light sink tip are working well too. The crowds are definitely there, so show up early and stake a claim to your rock. Snake River (WA) The current flow is 14,600 cfs at Anatone. Fish are milling around in the Snake. They’re making their way up to the higher tributaries. There are good opportunities to be had from the Snake this time of year.
