January means calving season. Calving season means cold, snow, sleds, late nights and earlier mornings. This fall it'll be chutes and shots, pour-on and branding. If you're a back grounding operation though, you're branding and chuting from about October to January. I recently spoke with N40's own Jennie Ritland she and her husband run a commercial cow herd along with the feeders and backgrounded calves out of their Montana outfit: Ritland Feeding Company. I haven't had time to hit the Columbia river for awhile so I took a quick trip down on Christmas Eve morning. Went and swung a couple of spots below the dam that have been good producers in the past. I tied on a Black Twisted Bugger and after the third swing I had a hook up. Didn't feel like a steelhead but gave a good couple of head shakes and was gone. After about 30 minutes of no action, I hooked up again. After a soft fight I landed triploid rainbow, in the 6lb range. I packed up and took a 15 minute drive further down river. on the fourth swing I hooked up, no mistaking that this was a steelhead. With the rivers acting like roller coasters, those of us here at the shop have been giving one of our local lakes some casting time. This got me to thinking of what flies most people use there. Most people that know me, know I like to think outside the box when it comes to trying and tying new flies. After sitting down and doing a little internet search about what style of flies are used at other lakes like the one close to us, I found some patterns not used around here. Out came the vise and I got busy tying these patterns in a few different colors. Tied up about a dozen very simple flies in these patterns. The next day I handed them off to Tanner since he was headed to that lake before coming to work. Tanner fished for about 2 hours and was rewarded with 5 nice trout landed.   This past week, we had some excellent fly fishing reports. We also had a couple not so excellent reports. Seems the fishing can be strong one day and off the next. That sounds like the Missouri River. The water conditions were a bit changeable. Mostly clear and then suddenly off color. Believe it or not, Holter Lake is still wide open (ice free) and can get a bit stirred up with wind and temperature changes. Changing flows on the river move decaying vegetation. While the flows are mostly stable this time of year, they sometimes bounce around a couple hundred CFS and that can impact conditions for a short time. Nymphing the fire beads, pink Lightning Bugs and even the worm have been the ticket for some. Brown and copper streamers are the magic bullet for others. El Nino is in full affect here in North Idaho. Rain on ski hill everyday combined with warm winds is making normal winter activities a chore. On the bright side of things, the water temps are still in the low 40’s providing some fishing opportunities. Kokanee are still spawning in a few of the local creeks and there are some big fish hanging out with them. The Clark Fork River has been putting out a few fish and there are even some midge hatches during the heat of the day if conditions are nice enough. On Tuesday we went a swung some flies searching for a bull trout or post spawn brown. With 15’ of T-18 we searched some of our favorite runs with only a few grabs to show for it.
