This past week, we experienced a serious thaw and some afternoon temps that were down right May like. When we get a thaw this time of year, the Chinook winds roll in with the warmth. The howling winds vacuum up the snow and ice and change conditions in a hurry. If the warming trend holds out for more than a couple days, then the winds usually moderate. The best winter fly fishing happens when the warming trend lasts for three or more days. Some lucky anglers managed to find the time to get on the water during this ideal window. I got a call from my friend Rod, from Griff's Fly Fishing Adventure the other week. He said we should hit the river on my birthday. Sounded good to me since I had not had a chance to get out for a while. I met up with Rod at the WDFW take out below Carlton. We ran back up to a private launch about 3 miles above Carlton where Rod had already put his boat in. The Temperature was a brisk 35 degrees under clear skies. It's amazing how every time we go out in Montana you never know what to expect. This fall we were headed out for a brisk fall morning elk hunt. We all have our spots but it is always fun to try something new. A friend and I figured we'd just get on a ridge top and listen to find out where to go as the elk were said to be in full rut. As we were driving in, we didn't know the area and in Montana's mountains sometimes it's best to find out where you are before you start walking. I have owned my mare, Chopaka War Jet, for 18 years. She has always been fractious and a kicker. She stands in the pasture and kicks the fence, the feeders, other horses, the air-. I three way hobble her in the horse trailer. I have learned how to be around her, and she knows what will absolutely not be tolerated by me. When people ask me what I do, they rarely get my true profession as a first response. Instead, I joke about a being a part time pumpkin farmer, a dad to the coolest kid around, a dusty grain truck driver for my father in July, or an absent minded fiancé to my bride to be. Met up with the Mills boys for a day of arctic angling on the Snake River this past weekend. Temperatures were subzero as we cruised Washington Highway 195 towards Lewiston, ID. Stepped into the river by 9 a.m. Temperature had increased into the single digits/low teens as we made our first pass through the lower river.   We fought frozen guides, reels, and dirty water all day but the scenery was amazing per usual. The Grande Ronde was pushing mud, hurting clarity on the lower river. The combination of cold, sun, and dirty water made for slow fishing. Nature was out in full force despite the cold, as were the gear boats. We managed a full day on the water and even hit a buzzer beater on the last run of the day.
