    Eastern Washington Fishing Report 06.14.18

Methow River At 2450 cubic feet per second, the Methow River is coming into shape real fast. It continues to drop a little at a time and baring a heavy runoff from the high country or heavy rains it will be a lot more accessible then it is right now. I had a chance to get out on Monday for a couple of hours until the wind forced me off the water. Using my 6wt Echo glass rod I was able to work some tight area single hand spey casting with a OSPT head. Landed a couple of nice fish, one being a 19" cutthroat the other a 17" rainbow. Had a few other tugs and a couple of on and gone fish that I never could get a look at. My Mini BDL and a Sculpzilla were the flies of choice that day. Most of the fish seem to be hanging out at about 4 to 5 feet from shore, depending on the run make up. Nymphing would be another good choice to use. A good stone...

Great Falls, Montana Fishing Report 06.14.18

Missouri River It’s a whole new river to explore. From 20K a week ago Sunday to a seemingly diminutive 12K to start this week. How low will it go now? Enough to bring on the dry fly action for certain. In fact, it’s already happening. Nymphs Mayfly nymphs are a good primary bet now with the PMD hatch rolling along. The TFP Crust Nymph will be a great choice for the next month or so. Worms, Mayfly Nymphs, Caddis Pupa, Sow Bugs and Crayfishy stuff are all in the game. Leaders are getting shorter, so casting is easier. Fish are also moving to the sexy bubbly and roiling water again, otherwise known as the fun water. Dry Flies PMD’s, will likely be the dominant player with a few Callibaetis and Caddis. Brown Drakes may be coming soon on the lower river, so be prepared. In the still higher water, fish will be found sipping inside eddies...

    Lewiston, Idaho Fishing Report 06.14.18

Lochsa River An employee of the shop spent some time up river on his days off. He has reported that he could've given those fish the kitchen sink and they would've eaten it. At the time, he did not see any flying insects around. It is time to start fishing droppers. Flies to use would be attractor patterns. Royal Wulff, Parachute Adams, Chubby Chernobyl, Humpy, the kitchen sink. Nymphs to fish, pheasant tail, hares ear, zebra midge. Don't forget to throw a streamer while up there. Grande Ronde (WA) No reports from the Ronde. Yet the river has been dropping. Baitfish patterns and poppers are the arsenal we would be throwing. Clouser Minnow, Woolly Bugger, Galloup's Dungeon. As far as poppers go, it'll be up to your experimentation to figure out which one works. —North 40 Lewiston Read past reports from the Lewiston region here, or clic...

    Coeur d’Alene Fishing Report 06.14.18

Coeur d'Alene River Flow 1,430 cfs at Cataldo and dropping. What a great time of year. We have been blessed with good high water this year and this has done wonders for our fisheries this year. The fishing on the Coeur d'Alene has been fantastic and should stay the course. We had a great spell of rain and cooler weather over the weekend and hopefully this is the recipe for the rest of the year. Getting an occasional rain through the summer will make things even better. Don't be afraid to go when we get some overcast and rain, the fish love it. Now if it rains too hard to muddy up the water that is a different thing but an occasional rain usually is a great thing. We are seeing great Green Drake hatches, Caddis are still strong mid day, stoneflies are still about too. The pale morning duns should be coming on strong soon too. Still kille...

    Falling Water and Rising Fish

Falling Water and Rising Fish If you have not been paying attention to flows on the Missouri River, the river peaked briefly at 20K and then began falling quickly on June 3rd. Boat Show Right now, it is still a boat show for most with incredible Nymphing possibilities, good streamer prospects and some rising fish for the dry fly fanatics.   The heavy traffic of May has subsided as anglers are now spreading about the state.  If you live in Great Falls and were afraid to get out there in the thick of it, your time has come again. Bank Side Recently, some of the best fishing has been by standing on rocks and fishing right along the edges of the river.  That will continue to be an option and now that the water is falling, there will be more and more places to move about.  Keep an eye on the flows and don&rsqu...

This fly allows you to stop the fly without moving it too far in.  The fly is weighted and angled to move down and up more so than a normal fly which allows more movement in a shorter distance.  The bunny at the back of the fly allows the fly to move well even when stopped and falling in the water column.       Red Rabbit Strips Red Wonderwrap or Sexi Legs Pearl Polar Chenille UV Red Polar Chenille UV White Twisted Rabbit Zip Strips 1/0 U506 Umpqua Jig Hook 210 Ultra Thread Red or Hot Red

  10. Fly of the Week: Chubby Chernobyl

Fly of the Week: Chubby Chernobyl

This fly is synonymous with western trout fishing. And, in fact, this was my go-to fly when I was guiding. When the Chernobyl first hit the scene it did not have a poly-wing. The addition of a poly-wing was a necessity as the original fly, even when tied on a large hook, sat very flat in the water and made it hard to track in the wrong light and in choppy water. There are many variations of this famous fly—tan, red, royal, and skwala colors, along with the notorious purple. And all of them work. That’s why you'd be hard-pressed to find a western fly shop without five or six variations in its bins. It's gotten to the point that some anglers don’t even want to tell other anglers what they got them on. With a big sigh they might say, “Cherbs,” which is the common term of endearment. When I tie Cherbs, I leave the legs pretty long....
