The Clearwater On the drive up to the IDFG meeting in Orofino earlier this week, I noticed the clarity of the Clearwater was good. The Lochsa and Selway rivers had been on the drop since the last big blowout. I checked the gauges though, and it’s not looking good—the rivers are slowly rising again. I don’t think the mainstem will be fishing this weekend. You can, however, swing a few spots on the North Fork, below the dam. If you get there early enough you might be able to sneak in a few cast before the other anglers show up. Grande Ronde River (WA) The gauge at Troy, Oregon is reading about 4,000 cfs. The river has been on the drop this week. The fish will be moving around and happy. It has the potential to bring some fish to hand. This is one of the many new prop body baits to hit the market last year.  In a bassmaster.com article, after the event, Christie is quoted saying, “I fished grass beds over spawning areas that funneled back into the main lake.”  The BASS article goes on to say that Christie’s two “main” choices were the “Booyah Poppin Pad Crasher Frog and the Booyah Pad Crasher.”  However, neither of those two Booyah baits have a prop body on them and it is clear from the video footage that Christie was throwing some type of plopper prop bait. Missouri River It’s yo-yo season when it comes to the weather. This morning when I looked at the temp, it was 4 degrees. By the time I got to work, it was 36. But the temp is going to drop again with a projected high of 9 degrees. I think it’s time to tie some flies. I did hit the jackpot day last week. It was 46 degrees and the trout spey action was fantastic. I swung a new minnow pattern I’m working on, off a floating line with a 12-foot leader tapered to 3X. Fish ate on the sink, on the swing, on the jig, and on the strip. Guess I’ll just have to relive that day this week. Winter on the Missouri River February can be a great month when the weather cooperates. In the coldest weather, fish within a mile or two of Holter Dam. Coeur d'Alene River Well, the good news is that water levels are dropping about as fast as they went up. However the CDA still has a ways to go yet. It is currently in the mid 9,000 cfs range and I’d only float it around 3,000 cfs. It’s wade-friendly at 1,500 to 2,000 cfs. So be patient and keep tying those Skwalas as the stonefly season is right around the corner. Stay tuned. St. Joe River I think this will be floatable this weekend if the flow continues to drop. If so, the Joe should be around 5,000 cfs by the weekend and that is a great range to float. It will be streamer city too. Big junk in olive and black will be the way to go. Nymph rigs will be great as well—try tandem beadhead rigs, big stone fly nymphs, Twenty Inchers, Prince Nymphs and Pheasant-Tails in bigger sizes, and San Juans. Our local rivers, including the Snake, Clearwater and Grande Ronde, are all high and blown out. This weekend would be a great time to take advantage of our free fly-tying courses, unless you just want to practice your cast. If you do, however, be careful—the rivers are running high and fast. You could also come into the shop and shoot the breeze with us. We always love talking to our fellow anglers. If you have to get outside, you might try shed hunting—our local herds are dropping their antlers and these are always fun to find. Check in next week for an updated report.
