Eggs. From baking to breakfast, we use eggs in just about everything. Three years ago, I bought some baby chicks and decided to see why this whole "Urban Chicken" industry was growing so fast. I started out with fourteen baby chicks, brought them home, and set up our brooder kit that had the walls and post for a brooder heat lamp. I first set it up in my garage worried the little buggers needed to be inside rather than just in the barn outside. In the spring of 2009, I walked into the local North 40 Outfitters (known as Big R at the time) with a baby on my hip asking the tall, red headed manager for a job. I knew nothing about farm or ranch, but desperately needed a job like many others in our community. I was hired the following week. I quickly began learning vendors, what each product was used for, etc. It was a whole other world for me, but it was fun. Several months after I started, a young dairy farmer walked in. January means calving season. Calving season means cold, snow, sleds, late nights and earlier mornings. This fall it'll be chutes and shots, pour-on and branding. If you're a back grounding operation though, you're branding and chuting from about October to January. I recently spoke with N40's own Jennie Ritland she and her husband run a commercial cow herd along with the feeders and backgrounded calves out of their Montana outfit: Ritland Feeding Company. I have owned my mare, Chopaka War Jet, for 18 years. She has always been fractious and a kicker. She stands in the pasture and kicks the fence, the feeders, other horses, the air-. I three way hobble her in the horse trailer. I have learned how to be around her, and she knows what will absolutely not be tolerated by me. Don't get me wrong, she is easy to catch, will do anything under saddle that I ask. She is as comfortable as an old cowgirl boot, she just has a few issues--but I'm alright with that.
