Mathews' Z2 Bow Review: The Perfect Compromise

Mathews Z2 compound bow review (4)

For the better part of my hunting career, I have owned bows with 70 pound limbs. However, shooting this heavy draw weight has really started to affect my shoulders, which also affects how often I can shoot and for how long. So, with that in mind, I decided to put my current setup up for sale and begin the search for a new hunting bow. I shot quite a few different models, all with 60 pound limbs, and despite the fact that my shoulders were more comfortable, I really felt like this draw weight was just too light for what I wanted to do.

Weight Configurations in the Mathews Z2 Bow

As I was wrestling with this thought and trying to decide what to do, I happened to be browsing through Mathews' annual sales catalog and noticed that they offered their Z2 model in several different draw weight configurations. Among these was the option to order this particular bow with 65 pound limbs. I have always been a fan of the "classic" Mathews look: single cam, solid limbs, and a short axle-to-axle. The Z2 fit this image to a T. It seemed to have everything I was looking for so I placed an order for a left handed, 65-pound Z2 in their Lost Camo pattern.

Here's a DIY course on how to tune your bow.

When the bow showed up, I was immediately impressed. The camo on this Mathews was flawless, it was just a really good looking bow! The 30 inch axle-to-axle looked like it would work fantastic when I was sitting in my tree stand waiting out big whitetails here in Washington, and I have no doubt it would work equally as well for anyone wanting to spot and stalk. It didn't take long before I was chomping at the bit to set this thing up!

Fingers Crossed

I threw on a Trophy Taker SmackDown Pro rest, centered everything up, and went into the range to take a few shots through paper. Drawing the 65 pounds felt like the perfect compromise; not too light, but not so heavy it hurt. I felt like I could shoot all afternoon! And so with fingers crossed, I stepped up to the plate and let an arrow fly. Within just a couple shots and a few small adjustments, I had this Z2 punching perfect bullet holes. Impressive! I can't wait to get this thing in the woods this fall chasing bruiser bucks, and here is what this whitetail rig will look like:
