I bought my first quality fly rod from Mountain View sports in Anchorage, Alaska around 1990. It was a Sage DS, or Discovery Series kit, and I hoped it could replace my first fly rod, which I bought after saving up my lawn-mowing money all summer. That first rod was fiberglass and had a reel on it that was loaded with level floating line. It was crap, and I learned that a tail-hooked sockeye and cheap $40 drug-store reel don’t mix well. Every steelheader has a theory on fly choice. Some carry dozens in their fly boxes and switch from one to another during the course of a day. Others stick to a single pattern they’ve had suc-cess with, knowing that—sooner or later—a fish will take that fly. Trevor Covich takes a slightly different approach—often he fishes a singular pattern, but he’ll switch from one color to another depending on water conditions and a particular “feel” for the day. Omak Lake The weather has improved a lot. I have been getting good reports from the few anglers who have been hitting the lake in the last few days. The large pods of Lahontans are not yet cruising the shoreline, but there are enough just out where the water deepens down to 10 feet to keep you casting. Most of the anglers I have talked to are reporting hooking up on over a dozen fish each day. The most popular streamers are, the #6 olive Sculpinator, and the #2 tan or olive El Sculpito. Indicator anglers are having good success with the #8 black or purple TFP Balanced Squirrel Leech. A #14 or 12 red Snow Cone Chironomid is picking a few fish up also.
