When the first arctic air rolls across the region, many bass anglers hang it up for the year. For myself, mid to late fall is synonymous with big smallmouth bass and little competition out on the water. No other season consistently produces smallmouth over 20 inches in length and fish over five-plus pounds. It has been nearly three years since I learned about the storied waters of the “American Reach” stretch of the Columbia River.  It was during a long drive back home from a frigid, but rewarding, trip to the Grand Ronde when I listened to Ask About Fly Fishing host D Roger Maves’ interview with an eclectic, versed, scholarly guide, and river keeper by the name of Steven Bird. What is the American Reach? During this interview, Bird described a wild trout fishery that was daunting yet extremely rewarding.  He spoke of fish steeped in lore, most of it true. The nights are cooling off, mornings are glistening with frost, water temps are rapidly dropping, leaves are turning, and smallies are ferociously feeding bulking up for the long winter that is fast approaching.  Bottom line, the seasons are changing and so are the patterns for these tiger striped bass. Of the seasons, fall is one of my absolute favorite times to fish for bass, most vacationers have gone home, and a lot of locals are investing their time towards hunting, so you are rewarded with a serene day on the lake with very little boat traffic.  You are also not melting in the sun and have a very good chance at catching a smallie with some serious shoulders.  Baits that cover water and do so quickly are going to be the ticket for keeping those lines tight.  Some of my go-to smallie baits and techniques for this time of the ye...

Missouri River The weather has been spectacular, and it appears to be staying that way for a while.  While crappy fall weather often means better fall fishing, the nice weather is sure enjoyable. Nymphs You can almost always get them on nymphs, but when it’s bright out in the spring and fall, it can get a bit tough.  Mid-morning is generally good with the scuds, sows, zebras, and small mayfly varietals. Dry dropper in the afternoon is often the best way to deliver your nymph in the low, clear water or even all day.  Tufted Zebras are hard to beat under an indicator fly. Coeur d'Alene River The fishing here has been super good.  Lots of great reports came in from this week and last week.  If the good weather keeps holding out, we will be fishing in mid-November.  However, it looks like we are supposed to be getting some cooler weather and rain soon.  This will be a good thing though.  Some cloud cover and a little rain will bring the blue wing olives out big time along with the mahoganies too.  It will be a shorter window for the hatch, but it should be killer.  As the weather gets colder, the hatches will be shorter lived.  Nymphing in the mornings or streamer fishing will get fish before the hatches happen.  Smaller sculpin patterns stripped quickly off the banks or fast riffles and you should catch some bigger fish.  The October caddis are still out, and fish will look at them most of the da...

Blue lake (Sinlahekin Valley WA) The pressure at the lake has been little to none and that’s too bad cause the fishing has been pretty good. Some nice brown trout have been caught and a fair number of chunky rainbows are showing up as well. There are a number of the area lakes closing at the end of the month, Blue Lake will be one of them. Depending on who I have talked to, I get quite a list of what flies are working. A #16 and #14 chironomid in black or red, black leeches, and buggers are the most common fly patterns being used with success. The browns are averaging right around 18 inches and the average rainbow is coming in around 16 inches. The way the catching is going, double-digit catches seem to be the norm. The phrase gives me the need to recap the past five summers of my life, all of which I spent in the bush of Alaska chasing down salmon, char, and grayling with some really great folks.
