Coeur d'Alene River Fishing is great right now, guys.  The cooler weather and rain has helped a ton and will keep the fish feeding up on top.  There are also lots of blue-winged olives, mahoganies, October caddis as well.  You’ll find that the middle of the day and afternoon when things have had a chance to warm up, will be the best fishing times.  Using smaller blue-wing olives 18-20s with an emerger or soft hackle dropper behind it will work.  If you are fishing the October caddis, remember to "skate" or "twitch" them, rarely do the real ones stay still on the water. A large size 6 or 8 orange stimulator is a perfect October caddis imitation.  Use Loon High and dry powder on them after they get waterlogged and keep them dry and they will produce much better.  Also, don't forget to try a streamer here and there too.  Finally, ...

We all learn, when we are little, that a pot of gold lies at the end of any rainbow. Those who do pursue a rainbow’s terminus will only be met with frustration. In many respects, I feel the same way about rainbow trout fisheries in Washington state. Don’t get me wrong, I love catching rainbows and pound for pound you won’t find many harder fighting fish in the state. However, rainbow trout are so widespread in the evergreen state that it's hard to avoid them, frustratingly so. You might think it odd to be frustrated with catching fish, but I’m a person who likes a little variety in his life. After all, you can only chase the pot of gold for so long before it gets boring. Lochsa River (ID) The current flow is 488 cfs at Lowell. With some rain coming down this week, the potential for a blow out on our rivers is likely. If the rivers don’t rise too much, you can expect some awesome fishing with some good catching. The hatches of caddis will still be coming off. Flies to think about fishing are some October caddis nymphs as well as the adults. An orange stimulator can work really well too. Finally, stonefly nymphs and other attractor nymphs can also produce fish as well. North Fork Clearwater River (ID) The current flow is 729 cfs at Canyon Ranger Station. With fluctuating flows, we have not had a report if the river is off colored or blown. It’s possible that by the weekend the river could be unfishable. Omak Lake (WA) With snow visible in the higher mountains you would think fall is trying to leave us. For the last few days, the fall rains have been falling on and off at the lower elevations. The good thing about this is the fishing hasn’t slacked off much at all. It may be a little wetter and colder but that hasn’t deterred hungry Lahontan cutthroats from looking for a meal. Like any type of fishing you have great days then the next day it's just okay. A customer sent me a photo of a Lahontan he caught and sticking out of its mouth was an 8-inch peamouth chub it had eaten not too long ago. It’s a streamer game right now with leeches coming in second. Fishing from shore is yielding great results most of the time. Missouri River Fall did not mess around this year.  None of those warm summerlike days mixed in with the cooler ones.  The outlook is for mostly cool weather with a splash of mild here and there.  It’s my kind of fishing weather.  As long as the daytime temps stay above icing, I’m happy. Nymphs As the days get shorter, the periods of fish feeding activity become more compressed.  If you are not a fan of being out early, you can wait until midday and work the baetis window.  Running short leaders with nymphs and emergers or even dry dropper rigs over the flats can be very rewarding midday to early afternoon. If you like to get out early, you’ll likely do best running longer leaders and fishing scuds, sows, and larger attractor nymphs. Fall fish want to eat. Clark Fork River (ID) Flows out of Cabinet Gorge Dam have been between 6,000- 18,000 cfs. Clarity is around 10 feet, and water temperatures are in the low 60s. The hatches have been decent throughout the day. Look for mahogany duns, October caddis, and midges. If the trout aren’t eating the naturals, throw something wild like a #10 red hippie stomper, a #12 purple chubby chernobyl, a #10 orange crystal stimulator or a #12 black moodah poodah. Nymphs work very well this time of year, so tandem rig flies like a #12 explosion stone and a #16 purple RL copper john. Personally, fall is my favorite time of year to break out the trout spey and swing. You never know what lurks below the river’s surface. When I was a little kid, I was almost killed by a largemouth bass.  I was a camper at Camp Warren on Half Moon Lake near Virginia, Minnesota.  I was 10 years old.  This is what I remember. Months in advance of pheasant season my dreams fill with visions of a sun-soaked field, some bramble along the edge, and a rooster pheasant strutting his stuff.  I cannot wait for the start of the season.
