Recently, someone posed a question to me: “Do you tape your spey rod ferrules?” My answer is “no.” That said, I have guided anglers who insisted on taking the time to tape each ferrule after assembling their rods. For some, it’s almost a ritual and can’t be rushed. When the taping process took place, I was usually fidgeting and taking deep breaths and trying to remain calm... while good water rolled by . . . unswung, of course. The concept of taping spey rods has some merit because spey casting generates lots of torque. Depending on the style of casting, that torque can come from differing angles. Through the course of a fishing session, sections sometimes loosen at the ferrule connections. A loose section can lead to damage, cracking or even full breakage. Coeur d'Alene River Flow 2,430 cfs and climbing. It fished great last weekend but with the current rain it is on the rise. I think it is still a viable choice though for a few day as it is supposed to stop raining in the next day or two. It is still fairly low but is coming up quickly. The streamer fishing should be killer. Big double Congas, Dungeons, Sculpins, black and olive Woolly Buggers. Get them down quickly with a sink tip or split shot and strip them quickly. Concentrate on the slower pockets and near the banks as the water is coming up and the fish will migrate to the slower stuff now. Nymphing will be great too. Larger stone fly nymphs trailed with a smaller bead head nymph will be killer as well as the San Juan Worm. Hopefully the rain will cease quickly and not muddy up the water to quickly. Missouri River Spring can be an ephemeral thing in Montana and while the calendar says it’s almost here, some days are spring-like and others remain wintery. One thing is inevitable, however. The days are getting longer and the higher sun will continue to work its magic, even when the thermometer dips. One curious thing about spring on the Mo, is that the sunny days are often marginal for fishing. The cloudy days reminiscent of winter can be downright legendary. If you want to enjoy the bright days of spring, by all means, get out there. If you want to catch a bunch of fish, layer up and get after in on the cloudy, rainy, or even snowy ones. Lenore Lake Lenore Lake opened March 1. Lenore was one of the Washington's first lakes to have Lahontan cutthroat. For a long time, Lenore had some real bruiser fish in it, but in the last 10 years the size of the fish has diminished. Still, you can expect fish in the 16"-20" range. This time of the year the north end of the lake is going to be a very productive area due to the fish podding up for the spawn cycle. I was able to get out and hit the lake a few days ago and got a hook into a couple of nice fish. But they came unbuttoned shortly after hook-up. The water clarity was poor. Visibility was down to about eight inches and I don’t really didn’t know the exact reason behind the dirty water. Like most years I'm confident it will get better.
