The original Thingamabobber strike indicator has been the go to for the majority of anglers for some time now.  Recently, the Air-Lock indicator has floated onto the scene.  Just about everyone who sees them tries a pack.  Then they often grab another.  Is the Thingamabobber dead?  Not really.  Here are some creative ways you can use the Thingamabobber and the Air-Lock.   Thingamabobber: Available in sizes ½", ¾", 1" and 1 ¼" Original or Jam Stop Loop on Pro: Quick and easy Con: Kinks the leader and it can still slip. Fly reels come in a dazzling array of styles, colors and price points.  So what makes a good fly reel? Basically, you need a reel to hold a fly line that matches your rod and you need enough backing to meet your fishing demands. That’s priority one.  If we just stopped there, then any old reel would do, but we have some other important considerations. Balance It is nice to have a rod and reel that balance.  In other words, when you grip the handle, the weight of the reel matches the shaft of the rod.  An $800 fly rod tends to be lighter than an $89 fly rod.  The $89 rod will match fine with an inexpensive resin body reel.  The $800 rod will be better suited to a light weight machined aluminum reel. The Missouri River from Holter Dam to Cascade is like two Different Rivers.  If you fish from the Dam to the Dearborn River right now, expect to fish some fine tippets and small flies.  The water is clear and the fish are tuned into Mayflies.  Big bright indicators are not helpful.  The most consistent action seems to follow the Mayfly cycle with fish keying on emerging baetis from about 10am to 2pm.  Under an indicator, Blooms Weight Fly is a great option instead of lead. I had good success with purple yesterday.  Fishing a visible size 14 parachute with a slim body mayfly dropper is a great way to go in the skinny water. Now that I've confirmed Mike and Reese aren't in the Bee Mafia and the bees have been transplanted into their new hive, it's time to check on the Queen. After all, everything revolves around her (this is the story of my life with a 4 year old who thinks she is a Princess Elsa). The main reason to check on the hive a couple days after introducing the colony to their new home is to make sure 1) that she and the colony are there, and 2) to see if they have started to build and acclimate to their new home. We also want to remove the cage that the queen was in when we first introduced the colony. We transplanted our bees May 1st and went to check on them May 4th. It kind of caught me by surprise.  I mean I know we got a ton of rain. I fished in the deluge on Saturday, but on Sunday evening, the river was still clear.  I guess it took a while to catch up.  This year, I’ve been spoiled by green water and clear water.  I’d almost forgotten about brown water.  I’m not going to say I’ve missed it, but I’m not unhappy to see it either. Brown water is important.  Brown water means plentiful water.  Brown water means flushing and rebirth.  Brown water carries silt away and clears the river bed like a vacuum cleans your carpet. Although I caught no fish this morning, it's good to see brown water again.  For a little while.
