Aside from Christmas, Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I love opening up the front door to see who or what awaits me on the other side. According to the charts on LPOIC.org's website, the lake has turned over down in Bayview, ID. Although there still is a 54-55 degree surface temp near Hope, ID. Ever since the navy put in a temperature gauge off of one of their barges, I have been studying the effects that weather patterns have on Lake Pend Oreille's temperature. You can now view what is called "Water Column Profile Data" on the lake conditions website. This plots shows water temps from the surface down to 600 feet. Yesterday the water in Bayview went from 55 degrees to 45 degrees in a 24 hour period. It is interesting watching this graph and seeing the effect that weather fronts have on the lake's temp. When a low pressure comes in, the graph shows lots of activity. When a high pressure is in place, the graph settles down and water temps separate at various depths. Two...

The story of Glacial Lake, Missoula and the ancient flood that forever changed the landscape of the Pacific Northwest has always intrigued me. This landscape feature is in one of the areas we serve at North 40 Outfitters, so I figured I'd go learn about it, and see for myself. Several thousand years ago, a finger of glacial ice moved through near present day Lake Pend Oreille damming the Clark Fork River and creating Glacial Lake Missoula. Imagine a giant buildup of ice creating a glacial lake the size of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario combined. The pressure on the ice continued to rise until the water level reached its maximum elevation of 4,200 feet causing the ice dam to fail, exploding the water downstream at a rate of 10 times the combined flow of all the current rivers in the world, moving at speeds up to 50 mph on its 430 mile journey...

STEELHEAD OPENER IS PRODUCING RESULTS With the recent opener in the Omak/Okanogan area for steelhead Matt (North 40 Archery Lead, Omak, WA) and myself have been chomping at the bit to spend some much needed time in the water.  The Okanogan River is a particular favorite for myself because of its low fishing pressure and public fishing access points.  Keeping in mind that steelhead are selfish and difficult to catch even on a good day, the fishery receives less numbers then its counterpart, the Methow River, making it a true challenge to land a chromed giant. Mo Report 10.21.14 We spent the weekend camped on the lower Missouri but fished the canyon section from Dearborn down to Cascade pretty thoroughly.  The hot weather was not ideal for swinging streamers but we did catch a few, and as soon as this weather gets back to normal it should be game on.  We did catch a few good fish on the swing and a number of home brewed swing patterns, as well as any of Ish’s swing patterns (which we have a big selection of in the bins) were producing.  Some of the best swing patterns in the bins include Ish’s swinger cray, Ish’s Kool Herc, and Ish’s Grand Master Flash.  The weeds have mostly exited the river except in the back eddies but the faster runs are mostly weed free, especially compared to even just a few weeks ago.
