    Chopaka Lake Report 08.31.18

With summer in full retreat and fall bearing down on the Cascades, it was time to venture up to Chopaka Lake. This fly fishing only lake is immensely popular and crowded in the spring but on this beautiful day, I shared the lake with only two other anglers. While some smoke remains in the valleys leading up to the lake, the air around the lake was clear with only a fine haze clinging to the nearby peaks. Air temperatures were in the low 50’s when I hit the water and are not rising beyond the 70’s most days. The water temperature was an ideal 62°F. Home to more than just Chopaka Lake, Washington has great water to fish. Read our guide to Washington stillwaters. Fishing Chopaka My Chopaka fly selection this time of year includes a variety of leech patterns; including wooly buggers and balanced leeches with and without beadheads, gras...

  6. Fly of the Week: Montana Intruder

Fly of the Week: Montana Intruder

Adapted from a gaudy Flashabou intruder style fly that worked well for Alaska salmon, the #montanaintruder utilizes a troutier color scheme. Gold and copper flashabou offer great movement and attraction when flash is desired. The gold UV polar chenille has undeniable fish mojo and provides just enough bulk to balance the profile. Senyo’s laser dub shapes the head. While designed with the two-handed trouter in mind, the Montana Intruder will work on any fly line delivery system. Swing it slow when the water is cold and move it along at a quicker rate when metabolisms are higher. Interested in learning to tie your own Montana Intruder? Learn how here.

    Lewiston, Idaho Fishing Report 08.30.18

Lochsa River (ID) The current flow is 782 cfs at Lowell. We finally had some rain come down over the last week. The rain even spiked the river darn close to 1000 cfs. This means the fish will be active and happy as the river is starting to drop back down. Grasshoppers are still being reported as good flies. You’ll want to use big attractor patterns size #8-10. And, elk hair caddis is a staple in size #12-14. North Fork Clearwater River (ID) The current flow is 1190 cfs at Canyon Ranger Station. The river is dropping really quickly. The flows will be lower by the time the weekend comes. Fishing can be outstanding with these conditions. You’ll find that nymphs under a dry fly will be productive. Also, using them under an indicator will work very well too. Finally, you’ll want to use grasshoppers, elk hair caddis, and a yellow/ orange...

    Eastern Washington Fishing Report 08.30.18

Buzzard Lake (WA) We are finally getting a break in the temperatures around here. With nighttime temperatures in the low 50’s and daytime temperatures in the mid 80’s, our area lakes are starting to cool down. It still wouldn’t hurt to take a water temperature reading periodically while you are there. Buzzard is starting to turn on with some really nice rainbows being caught. First light until about 1:00 p.m. will be your best time. Using small leech patterns or scuds in the morning are good choices to start with. You’ll want to use them in the shallower waters out to about the 10-foot depth. After the sun gets a little higher, you might want to give some of the attractor leech patterns a try. Going deeper with a bomber chironomid this time of the year can be very productive.  I have had good results at the lake with the foll...

    Coeur d'Alene Fishing Report 08.30.18

Coeur d'Alene River The Coeur d'Alene River is fishing well since the cooler weather has come back.  It's amazing to see blue skies once again!  The smoke is, more or less, gone and it is time for some killer fall fishing.  Our extended forecast looks great.  Temperatures will be in the mid to low 70's for the next week, and the nights are supposed to be in the high 40's and low 50's.  This is primo weather for fishing guys and gals.  The micro ants are out and about so, these will be a key player for a while.  We are still getting a decent amount of pmds and spruce moths. Blue-winged olives should start showing up too.  The mahoganies are right around the corner and the October caddis too.  The evening caddis hatches are still good as well.  So, using a smaller 16-18 x-caddis or elk hair caddis, with a small flying ant droppe...
