Omak Lake (WA) Ever have one of those days when a number of things go wrong? Yet, you still look at the bright side of the day. A couple of days ago I finally had a chance to run out to Omak Lake and see if I could interest a couple of Lahontan cutthroats in a game of tag. I got to the lake just after sun up and even though there was a light wind, the lake looked good to me. I pulled my waders on and rigged up my 6-weight glass rod, grabbed my pack, and headed down to the lake shore. In my rush to get a line wet, I tried to stuff my camera into the inside pouch of my waders and fumbled it. I watched it as it fell. It struck the only big rock around me! Clark Fork River (ID) The flows out of Cabinet Gorge Dam have been between 4,000 to 20,000 cubic feet per second. The best time to fish this river is when flows are down. The water clarity is around 9-feet, and the temperatures should be in the mid to upper 60’s. You’ll want to try throwing hoppers, ants, beetles, small caddis, and tricos. When is doubt, throw a #14 purple rocky mountain mint, #10 purple chubby chernobyl, or a #12 H&L variant. Swinging streamers work well on this river too. My personal favorite patterns this time of year include; a #6 olive woolly bugger, a #8 olive balanced leech, and a #6 Montana intruder. Lake Pend Oreille Water temperatures have been between 71-77°F, and the clarity ranges from 9 to 10 feet. The kids have gone back to school, and the vacationers have gone home. Missouri River It’s the season of smiles for those who are fly fishing.  Dry fly fishing is really good.  Nymph fishing is really good.  Streamers are working too.  School is back in session and it’s hunting season again.  There are lots of lonely overlooked fish out there to catch! Nymphs As water temps begin to fall, fish will begin to chomp more and more aggressively.  It’s a seasonal cycle we love.  Scuds and sows are always on the menu.  Mayfly nymphs #12 - #22 are in the game and there are lots of flavors that can work.  The zebra and tufted zebra are also hard to beat with lots of tricos, midges and micro mays wriggling about. Through the week of August 27th through September 2nd, I had the pleasure of fishing some of Idaho/Montana/Yellowstone’s pristine waters with my wife and friends. Here is what I found. Madison River Usually, the first place I want to fish when I make the drive to Yellowstone country is the Madison River. We were able to hit the river for roughly four hours, and it didn’t disappoint. The well-worn streamside trails indicated that this summer was no different than any other, busy. Luckily for us, when we rolled into Raynold’s Pass, there was only one other car in the southeast parking lot. From the bridge, we walked upstream and were able to find a few trout. Lochsa River (ID) The current flow is 474 cfs at Lowell. With all this cool weather, the region has been fishing very well for anglers who are giving this river their time. I have been told the flies that are working consist of various caddis patterns, elk hair, CDC caddis, to the Grey Wulff, parachute adams, and even some grasshoppers and bigger attractor flies. You should be able to find yourself some bigger fish since they should be starting to move out of the tributaries. Plus, there will be the same ol’ delays on the road construction. Expect 15 to 30-minute delays. North Fork Clearwater River (ID) The current flow is 765 cfs at Canyon Ranger Station. The NF was slow for some folks who fished it this past week. Yet, I know of anglers who love to fish it this time of year because most folks are focusing their own efforts on elk. Us...

Coeur d'Alene River The fishing here is killer right now, guys.  It's all about the micro ants.  So, using a size 18-22 flying ant pattern behind a caddis, or a pmd, will catch fish like crazy.  Hoppers and beetles are still viable options too.  Spruce moths will work great as well, so a large size 10-8 light colored caddis pattern skittered on the surface will get lots of looks.  You’ll want to be on the lookout for the October caddis. The nymphs will be making their way to the edges. So, a large rock cased caddis nymph on the bottom will do the trick in the riffles.  Orange stimmies with a pheasant tail dropper is also a great searching set up.  Plus, soft hackles in the evenings with a caddis lead fly, or a pmd, and your good to go.  And, it looks like the beginning of next week we are supposed to get a cool down.
