Coeur d’Alene River Dry fly fishing is good on the CDA right now. The spruce moths, rusty spinners, caddis, run with soft hackles in the morning. Look out for the remaining ants, hoppers, and beetles tight to brushy banks on the warmer, sunnier days. Also, October caddis nymphs should produce well... And, be sure to keep your eyes open for October caddis adults in the next few weeks too. St Joe River October caddis, October caddis, October caddis! Using sizes 10-12 will do the trick. You’ll want to use chernobyls and fat alberts with a pheasant tail or a prince nymph. Plus, don't hesitate to try olive stones, size 16-18. Finally, small sculpin patterns in olive, tan or, black will produce in the deep, boulder garden type water. Missouri River I have not heard a bad report from anyone fishing the Missouri River lately.  Everyone seems to be having some level of success and some are having epic sessions of fly fishing bliss. Nymphs Lots of nymphs are working -everything from zebra midges to zirdles. The biggest issue happening is dealing with floating weeds.  That’s why many anglers are fishing up near the dam.  There are less weeds in the drift and lots of fish.  As you move down the canyon, you will encounter more weeds, but less traffic.  It can be a good trade-off.  The fishing is still good all the way down the river to Cascade. One of the best ways to beat the weeds is to fish a dry dropper rig.  Use your favorite visible terrestrial and then hang your favorite nymph underneath.  This rig is much easier to navigate amongst the weeds and can be ver...

Lochsa River (ID) The current flow is 422 cfs at Lowell. I received a report from an avid angler who said that the Lochsa is fishing really well at the moment. His fly of choice was a Griffith’s gnat. He reported seeing spruce moths so thick that the water was white. Yet, no fish had been keying in on them. Elk hair caddis worked a few times for him, but not like the gnat. He also reported seeing lots of anglers on the river, even throughout the whole week, not just the weekend. North Fork Clearwater River (ID) The current flow is 693 cfs at Canyon Ranger Station. Right now, nothing new from the North Fork has been reported by any anglers. I imagine the fishing is starting to get as good as the Lochsa is. It would be best to focus on covering a lot of water to have more shots at fish. Chopaka Lake (WA) You know dry fly action is good when a couple of guys drive all the way down from Chopaka Lake to pick up more flies that they have run out of. Parachute Adams was what they were after and they just about cleaned me out of the #14 and put a big dent in the #16s’. They told me they have never had such good topwater action on a lake like they have been having in the last couple of days. Right after the dry fly guys left, I had a gentleman stop in on his way out heading home. He had stopped in a few days earlier on his way up to the lake for information and a few flies. He told me the fishing was great and he wished he didn’t have to go home. He told me about the other guys and the great dry fly action they were having, but he said he liked to strip leeches and did great with what he picked up here in the shop a few...

Clark Fork River (ID) Flows out of Cabinet Gorge Dam over the past week have been between 4,000 and 25,000 cubic feet per second. The water temperatures are in the low to mid 60’s and clarity is 9 to 10-feet. The best time to fish the river has been when flows are at their lowest. When flows are down, the trout are more prone to sip dry flies in the riffles. Bug life includes; caddis, western yellow mayflies, craneflies, hoppers, and ants. If the trout aren’t falling for the “match the hatch” technique, toss a #16 purple rocky mountain mint, a #16 twinkling gulper, or a #10 moodah poodah. The Idaho side of the Clark Fork isn’t known for a prolific October caddis hatch, but we do get a few. I haven’t heard of any sightings yet, but they are coming soon.   Fall is my favorite time to go fishing. After long, hot and smoky summers the air finally clears, and fish go on the feed fattening themselves up for the coming winter.
