    Eastern Washington Fishing Report 09.27.18

Omak Lake (WA) My favorite time of the year to fish Omak Lake is here. Fishing has been great with 20 plus fish days easily obtainable. Schools of young baitfish are in close hugging the shoreline throughout the lake. Just out of sight, the Lahontan cutthroat are lying in wait for the right moment to make a dash to feed on these smaller fish. I was at the lake the other day and it was crazy stupid how good the fishing was! I grabbed a couple of minnow patterns from the shop that I haven't used in a while and I was not disappointed. I used a #10 strung-out Alvin and a #4 olive/white Silverman’s mo-joo. These were the only two patterns I used for the couple of hours that I was there. They kept me busy with hungry aggressive Lahontans. I had my 6-weight rigged up with a Scientific Angler sonar stillwater intermediate line that got me do...

  4. Great Falls, Montana Fishing Report 09.27.18

Great Falls, Montana Fishing Report 09.27.18

Missouri River Fall is here, and temperatures are chilling.  Trout love clean cold water and over the next month, the water should be spot on in their happy zone. Nymphs Fish high for Nymphing success.  The dam to Craig is the routine.  Zebra’s rule, but lots of other small nymphs can get the job done too.  Scuds and sows are standard on top or you can run a big zebra and tiny zebra. Dry droppers are in favor for presenting nymphs in the canyon and down to Cascade.  Dropping PT or hares ear jig flies have become the standard searching combo.  You should also consider using zebras and tiny beaded mayflies. Dry Flies The caddis are still in force.  Some days they seem to get more attention than others. You’ll want to start out with a translucent sparkle pupa or an emerger in the morning and then shift to an adult like a party on...

    Coeur d'Alene Fishing Report 09.27.18

Coeur d'Alene River The fishing is fantastic.  The weather is ideal right now and looks like we will be getting the same throughout the week.  Tons, and I mean tons, of spruce moths are out on the rivers now -more than I have ever seen before!  I’m not sure the fish are super keyed in on them, as I had marginal success fishing a spruce moth pattern over the weekend and saw only a few get eaten in heavy feeding fish lanes.  However, I think as the weather gets even cooler they will be more responsive to them. You’ll find that mahoganies, blue wing olives, rusty spinners, small ants and hoppers are still out.  Also, midday will be your best bet for rising fish.  The nights are cold now and the sun really doesn't have a chance to warm things up until mid-morning.  So, there is no need to hustle to the river very early.  Midday t...

  6. Sandpoint/Ponderay, Idaho Fishing Report 09.27.18

    Sandpoint/Ponderay, Idaho Fishing Report 09.27.18

Clark Fork River (ID) Flows out of Cabinet Gorge Dam are ranging from 6,000 to 28,000 cubic feet per second. Water clarity is roughly 10 feet, and the temperatures are between 56-64°F. Waders are a must for this time of year due to dropping water temperatures. Fishing has been best when flows are between 6,000 to 10,000 cfs. Once the river nears 30,000 cfs, the lower Clark Fork below the bridge fishes better. You’ll want to look for bugs like October caddis, western yellow mayflies, and midges. Also, there has not been a lot of October caddis, but the Idaho side of the Clark Fork isn’t known for getting prolific October caddis hatches. If the trout aren’t keying in on the naturally matched flies, throw something like a #16 purple rocky mountain mint, a #16 gulper, or a #14 hippie stomper. Plus, swinging a #6 Montana mini intruder ...

    Lewiston, Idaho Fishing Report 09.27.18

Lochsa River (ID) The current flow is 381 cfs at Lowell. The fishing has been good for folks who have spent time up that way. I am hearing that October caddis are starting to fly off and fish are targeting them. It is a great time of year to be fishing for big cutthroat. North Fork Clearwater River (ID) The current flow is 672 cfs at Canyon Ranger Station. October caddis have been flying off up on this drainage as well. Not too many people have been fishing up this way due to it being Archery season. However, it is a great time of year to catch fish. Nymphing under an adult October caddis pattern can be very productive. Clearwater River (ID) The current flow is 3,090 cfs at Spalding. They have started to put the plug in the dam and it has been starting to drop. The fishing should start picking up more and more. The numbers over the Lower...
