DIY: Horseshoe Coasters

Horseshoes are a staple here in the Northwest, and across the country, both for its functionality on the ranch, and for its decorative uses. To add to its distinct decorative look, horseshoes are believed to give good luck and fend off evil spirits. In this DIY installment, we decided to use our Horseshoe collection to create some awesome and easily customizable Horseshoe Drink Coasters.

What you'll need:

  • Horseshoe(s)
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Scissors/Blade
  • Marker
  • Cork
  • Bandana

Need to stock up on anything? Check out supplies here.

Step 1: Place your horseshoe onto your cork sheet, and trace its outline. Cut out the cork piece that matches the outline of your horseshoe.

Step 2: Take your cork cutout and place it onto your bandana, and trace its outline. Cut the shape out of your bandana. This should give you 3 very similar shapes, and reduce your trimming efforts after you piece them together.

Step 3: Glue your bandana to your cork sheet. Be cautious about how much glue you use, certain materials, like a bandana, can have the glue seep through if there is too much. Press down for 30-60 seconds for the glue to set. Make sure this is glued well, including your edges.

Step 4: Glue your horseshoe to your combination of cork and bandana base. Hold and press for at least 1 minute to ensure that your horseshoe has taken the glue and sticks to your base.

Step 5: Trim excess material from the outside of your horseshoe, so you have a nice clean line around the outside.

Step 6: Optional (Not Shown): You can coat your coaster with a waterproof spray or oil, and let dry before using.

That's it! The great part about this project is you can customize to your specific taste very easily. We tried these steps with bandana, burlap, leather and denim, but there are dozens of material options out there for you to use.
