Fly Tying Season has Arrived
We are finally experiencing our first arctic blast of winter. We enjoyed an amazing extended fall period of mild weather and fantastic fishing, but it’s time to face the reality of winter. December is typically cold, dark and often the worst month of the year for Montana fly fishing prospects. The days are short, the nights are cold and that wind keeps blowing. The good news is we have holiday events and shopping to keep us occupied... and fly tying.
December is a great time to dig into your fly tying materials and sort things out. If you are like me, things got a bit scrambled over the busy fishing season. Now is the time to make the plans you’ll need to fill up your boxes for the coming fishing season. Make that fly tying list and then stock up on the materials you’ll need to get after it.

If you are new to fly tying or considering getting started, then you will be happy to know that we are offering both free fly tying classes and open fly tying sessions at the North 40 Fly Shop in Great Falls, Montana. We are even planning some fly tying events this winter, so stay tuned.

Our free fly tying classes are ideal for those who have never tied a fly before, or need a refresher after not tying for many years. We will provide everything you need to get started. We begin with basic thread work and move up to tying several universal fly patterns. Classes start in January 2017 and are held on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. We will keep them rolling into March 2017. Each class has three sessions from 5:30-7:00 pm.

Open Fly Thursday Nights
On Thursday nights during January, February and March 2017, we will have an open fly tying session from 5-7 pm. Bring your vise and materials to the store and get after it. While no formalized instruction is planned, we are always happy to help. Social tying and collaboration can be both fun and motivating. Together we can get the creative juices flowing.

We’ve got a Flymen Fly Tester Tank in the shop, so you won’t have to wait to see how your flies swim. Immediate testing helps you determine the tweaks you’ll need to build the best flies. Tie up a fly. Swim it. Tweak it until you like it and then confidently tie a bunch more that will "fish."
