Jaylow Yakima Kayak Rack

The Jaylow Yakima Kayak Rack is an automotive accessory you can use to haul your kayaks. It might seem intimidating to install some type of "rack" onto your car, but this Jaylow Yakima Kayak Rack is as easy as ordering pizza. Well almost.

To demo this one, Jake and I went out with Denise (who agreed to demo this product as she owns it and uses it whenever she goes out around GF). In the pictures you will notice she's the one who did all the heavy lifting this go-round. She started kayaking recently and almost has me talked into taking the plunge (pun absolutely intended).

This rack is ultra-reliable, heavy-duty and really easy to install. You can move it around your car's roof rack which means you can center it and take one kayak, or pair it up and take two. It comes with everything you need to secure your rig including bow and stern tie downs and kayak straps.

Read about our logging trip.

After Denise tightened the Jaylow to her car mounts and (with a little help) got her kayak up on the roof, she took the kayak straps and launched them over the top of the kayak. Her car looks brand new, so my first reaction was, of course, hysteria when I thought that metal clip was going to come down and ding up her rig. But I was left with a shrill yip stilled on my lip and my hand half-out. Why? Because the Jaylow buckles are wrapped in rubber and bounced off her SUV with barely a sound. Same thing on the windshield.

Maybe this seems like a little thing to get excited about- but it makes installation so much less hassle. You can try to fling the strap around (as Denise did 3 or 4 times) and not have to worry about scratching your ride. While the install really needs nothing more than the photo list below, there is one thing I am going to share with your for free. A "local tip", if you will.

Once you get your Jaylow Yakima Kayak Rack up and your kayak tied in, there is still one thing that you need to get. Look at this picture. You see those little pieces of what look like electrical cord? What are those inconspicuous little gadgets, you wonder? And I answer- those are gear ties. And you'll need them to stop the whistle you'll hear once you get on the road with your kayak strapped to the roof.

The wind will run right over your kayak and make it howl but these nifty little things (available at our store of course) act like silencers- they do something to the aerodynamics of the bound kayak that make it ride quiet. The whistling occurs because of the air flow over the bars. By wrapping the rack with gear ties, it disrupts the flow and breaks up the noise.
