New Savage Gear Baits for 2017/2018 Season

At last year’s ICast show in Orlando, Florida, Savage Gear launched the Suicide Duck, a floating, soft-body bird with “Whopper Plopper,” which is Savage’s name for a couple small props on the back of the bait that create a wake that fish can’t resist.

This bait created a serious buzz and was awarded ICast's highest honor as Best Hard Lure. This year, Savage Gear is launching a slough of hot baits that should contend, once again, for the hard-bait throne.

One of the most interesting of these new baits is the 3D Bat. To create the bat, Savage used a 3D scan of a real bat to create an erratic topwater lure that swims with a fleeing action. We are most excited about the 4-inch size.

Slightly different from Savage’s creative bird baits is the new Savage Goby. This is a tube bait that should be a great sculpin imitation. It’s called a goby (we have a video introduction to the Savage Goby online here), but depending on the color you select it could match a variety of baitfish in the waters where you fish. These new scented tubes come in six-packs.

If you thought swimbaits couldn’t get any better, you thought wrong. The new 4D Pro Series Trout uses a unique photo printing process to create the most lifelike patterns possible. These are line-through baits that come in 6, 8, or 10-inch sizes. If you don’t like throwing—and losing—high-priced swimbaits, you’ll like the price on these; they start at $14.99 so you don’t have to drop to your knees and shed tears if you lose one.

One of the most unique products we saw from Savage Gear is the new Back Lip Diver. This is a floating body with a plastic lip attached to the bottom rear of the bait (most lips are placed at the front of the bait). This rear lip allows for extra-long casts and promotes a unique side-to-side swimming action. We asked how durable the bills are, and how they might hold up when they hit bottom. The answer: “They have been heavily tested.”

Everybody loves soft plastics, and right now soft-body swimbaits are leading the popularity contest. The Savage Gear 3D Baitfish falls into this category and is going to be a topic to discuss this year. It’s available in 3 and 4-inch versions, which are pre-rigged with an internal hook system. The coolest thing is that they are available in paddle-tail and jointed versions.

If you see the bass community hovering around the Savage Gear booth this year, you can bet they’re trying to get a closeup look at a new bait called the Fruck. This bait is part frog and part duck. It’s similar to a hollow-body frog design except this one has a duck head and silicone “fruck” legs and feet, which create a bubble action. It also comes with a cool custom trailer hook, for times when short-striking bass are confused about what they are actually eating. They might be thinking, Is it a duck . . . is it a frog?

Possibly our in-house favorite for Savage Gear’s new lineup is the 4-inch size 3D Bluegill. This is going to be a fish-catching machine anywhere bluegill are staple forage. The 3D Bluegill is a perfect size and has a built-in jig hook that makes it an easy swimbait to use.

Equally as cool is the new Savage Gear Mini-Rad. This will be a great mouse bait, or it could imitate a small rat. It’s 6.5-inches long, including the tail. It has a small profile and provides a lot of movement.

It’s a long list of new baits this year from Savage Gear. Hopefully you’ll have a chance to give these baits a try. If you do, please comment below and give us some feedback on how they perform.
