Black Diamond 25-Ton Log Splitter Review and Product Demonstration

If you're in the market for a log splitter, Black Diamond is a brand exclusive to farm and ranch stores here in the Northwest. And, if you're like most buyers, you’re probably wondering what tonnage is right for you, what the motors are like, and a million other questions.

In the article below we will cover the basics of the 25-ton Black Diamond Log Splitters we stock, one is the portable 25-ton log splitter and the other is a 3-point, stationary log splitter. If you are interested in the Black Diamond 38-ton log splitter, find it here.

For this review, we will cover the basics:

  • The Black Diamond 25-ton versus the Black Diamond 25-ton 3-point models.

  • The splitter's ability to shift between horizontal and vertical splitting.

  • Power and efficiency of Black Diamond

  • What are the availability of replacement parts?

  • What does the warranty look like if I buy a Black Diamond log splitter?

Let's look at the Black Diamond Log Splitter and how it performs out in the field.

Black Diamond 25 Ton Log Splitter vs Black Diamond 3-Point Log Splitter

What’s the difference between the two Black Diamond 25-Ton log splitters that are on the market? The Black Diamond 25-Ton Log Splitter is portable and built on a trailer base for easy transport, and the 3-Point splitter is stationary. Watch the videos below to learn more about special features.

So, which one should you buy between these two models? It depends. The one above is for a smaller-scale operation, probably a home or barn that uses wood as its sole source of heat in the winter. If you have a wood shed where you bring in your logs for splitting, then you won’t necessarily need to move your log splitter anywhere, and the 25-Ton 3-Point log splitter will save you some money and get the job done just as efficiently as the trailered version you see below.

So, when choosing between these two models of log splitters, you should look at WHERE you will be splitting your wood. If it’s in the field, you know which one you need; if you have a wood shed and haul your wood to it, then your choice is also made.

Here is a breakdown of the engine and parts list in the 25-ton log splitter.

Black Diamond Log Splitter in the Vertical or Horizontal Position

The vertical mounting option was great with some of these larger logs we cut with the Husqvarna 450 Rancher coming in at around 175 pounds to just rolling the log up and under the splitting wedge was much easier than lifting it to the horizontal mount.

The horizontal mount was also serviceable, and the logs stayed in the track more readily when it was horizontal. Both splitting positions are good aspects of the Black Diamond; which position you prefer comes down to whether you can lift the logs you've cut to the horizontal position.

You will notice the pre-cut, two-triangle head on this splitting wedge. That is to keep the logs from "jumping" out if the blade hits a knot.

In the videos above, you can see John making the switch from horizontal to vertical effortlessly.

Power and Efficiency of the Log Splitter in Action

I saw what "popping" was for the first time while we were doing this demo. The blade, normally moving at a steady speed through all the logs, suddenly "whines" a little and almost stops.

Then, never failing on this trip, the Black Diamond Log Splitter cuts through those knots, with a sort of "pop," and the whine stops and two firewood sized logs drop to the ground.

I learned that, with some other log splitters, this ability to push through the "pop" spots didn't always go smoothly. One of the guys we were working with told me of what he'd seen in smaller log splitters:

"The popping sound can be a little bit dangerous in other splitters, because instead of that 'whine and pop' we just got with the Black Diamond, that piece of wood may have flipped, or jumped, out of the runners if there had been only one blade."

So, next time you are in the market for a log splitter, make sure you check for the "pre-cut" head it's a triangle shape at the front of the splitting wedge.

Where can I get replacement parts for the Black Diamond Log Splitter?

Now the next question that often comes in is this: “Where can I get replacement parts for my Black Diamond log splitter?” This is a great question because you don’t want to have to wait 10 years to get parts to fix your machine.

We’ve also had a lot of requests for a four-way splitting wedge, and the answer is: “Yes, we can help get you that.” Just send us an email at support@north40.com and we can help you out.
