Feeding Chickens, From Chick Starter to Egg Layers

You bought baby chicks and have brought them home to roost. Now what? How soon will they start laying eggs? That’s easy! Watch and learn as we explain the best feeds for chickens and how to transition them from crumble to pellets.

When Do I Switch My Young Hens to a Layer Feed?

Hi, I'm Jennie and I'm from North 40 Outfitters. I'm here to talk to you about the feed and care of your chicken. The baby chicks have been on chick starter since the day they were hatched and we want to switch them over to layer feed at about 20 to 26 weeks. That's when you're going to find your first egg and that's the perfect time to switch over from the starter feed to the layer feed. You can transition them from the starter crumbles to the layer crumbles and then onto the pellets, if you want to feed pellets.

How Do I Transition Between Crumbles and Pellet Feed?

The way to make this transition nice and smooth for your chicks is to mix your layer crumbles with your starter crumbles until the chicks get adjusted to that diet. Once they're adjusted to that diet, which is usually just one bag of each, just mixed together, you can go ahead and get another bag of layer crumbles, if you want them on pellets, and mix that with the pellets until they can pick out. That'll transition them from the little tiny crumbles to the pellets for the form of feed that they're eating. One of the feeds available, when we do this transition, will be your Layena. Layena has an Oyster Strong system in all of their feeds and they also have one feed that has the Oyster Strong System and Omega-3 and that Omega-3 adds to the quality of your egg yolk. It's going to make it nice and dark and it's going to give you extra Omega in your egg. Thanks for joining us for the chicken videos.
