Brewster Salmon Derby 2017
The Brewster Salmon Derby is one of Washington’s hottest summer fishing contests, and it takes place August 4th, 5th and 6th. This is the 12th Brewster Salmon Derby and it becomes more popular each year. You can win $2,000 for catching the biggest fish and reign “King of the Pool” for the year.
There are other age-group specific prizes as well, so there’s fun for the whole family.
- Adult winner gets $1,500
- Youth ages 9-14 can win $550
- 8-and-unders can win $100
This derby is a lot of fun and lots of money is up for grabs. Plus, even if you don’t weigh-in a fish, you still have a good chance to win on raffle prizes—this year there’s over $20,000 in raffle prizes up for grabs.

The fishing can be tough; the pool always has a good morning bite, but the toughest part of this derby is grinding it out all day in the hot summer weather… just hoping for your rod to have a takedown so you can yell, “Fish on!” The nice thing about this derby is that you don’t have to be the best salmon angler on the water. If you’re in the right place at the right time, you could catch the right fish to bump you up to first place!
Need gear before the tournament?
That’s how I won the 2015 Brewster Salmon Derby. The guy leading the derby had a king weighed in at 19.06 pounds and was holding 1st place on the first day. On the 2nd day, I caught the winning king at 2:15pm in the afternoon—it weighed 19.68 pounds! That was the fish that won the derby. It was the first year my dad and I ever entered, and we won. Anyone can win this derby, you’ve just got to grind it out, and hopefully catch the big hatchery king of the year!
Again, the 2017 Brewster Salmon Derby starts on August 4th and runs through August 6th. A mandatory skipper’s meeting is scheduled for Thursday night, August, 3 at 6 p.m. at Columbia Cove Park. Columbia Cove is located next to the boat launch at Brewster State Park.
The 2016 Salmon Derby had 226 paid entry's and 122 kings were weighed in. Mindy Webster won Queen of the Pool honors in 2016 with a 26.06-pound king. The adult winner was Les "Mutt" Willet with a fish that weighed 24.77 pounds. The youth winner was Tucker Pritchard at 15.00 pounds. Hope to see you guys out there!
