Step 1: Scout out where the ducks are

There is no point to duck hunting if there aren't any birds in the area you wish to hunt. This is why I have found it important to have scouting as my first step to having a fun hunt.

The evening before the big hunt is my favorite time to scout for an abundant population of birds. When scouting, be sure to pay attention where the ducks are feeding, sleeping, and flying.

Having the right binoculars can help you when you're out scouting.

If the ducks are gathered into a large group in the middle of the lake, try and find a rocky point or sand bar nearest to the bunch because they often circle around the group to stretch their wings.

Step 2: Hunt the mud flats and have the right blinds

As the lake continues to drop, hunting on large mud flats becomes more common. This raises the issue of properly camouflaging yourself and the blind you wish to hunt from.

The best option for this scenario continues to be a layout blind. They can be customized to look like the ground it lays on by adding grass, sticks, or even rubbing mud onto the outer walls.

If a lay out blind is not an option, a simple sheet of mesh camouflage over the hunter works just as well. Lately, I have been using 12 feet of camouflage burlap to help hide me and my kayak from watchful eyes.

Step 3: Get motion in the decoy spread

Lastly, a simple tactic that many experienced hunters know and many new hunters don't is to have movement in the decoy spread. Whether it is a motion decoy, jerk string, or flag it is essential to have movement in a decoy spread in order for ducks to make their final approach.

I have even thrown rocks near my decoys just to get a little more movement while working ducks are making a turn.

Hopefully this three point system helps attract more birds within shooting range for you and you hunting partners as it has for me. If you still have questions, use the form below and we'll work to get back to you in 24-hours.
