Fly Tying Season

Its midwinter and while there will be fishable days in the next several months, for many fly fishers, the focus will be on fly tying.  Winter is a great time to reflect on the past and plan strategy for the future.  Where will you fish?  What flies will you need?  What tweaks do you want to make to your favorite patterns?  How many will you need?

Josh has been busy for several months building up his streamer boxes.  With as many materials as he’s been purchasing, I figured he must be building a respectable collection.  So one day, I asked Josh to bring in his streamer box when it was finished to his satisfaction.  I was curious to see what he’d been crafting.

Turns out Josh was not satisfied until he had nine boxes filled up with various color schemes.  I don’t care who you are, that’s a pretty awesome collection.  Josh is not a commercial tier.  This is his personal assortment put together for 2016.  I’m lucky if I manage to keep one streamer box full.  I’m pretty sure he’s going to need some help getting all those big nasties wet.

While Josh loves fishing big meaty flies for toothy brown trout, he’s not averse to producing a few fish on nymphs.  He’s already got a respectable collection of nymphing fare started.

Is he done yet?  Well I’m sure Josh will be tinkering with a few more streamers just for fun, but now he’s on to dry flies.  In January, we will be hosting, "Bring your vise, Thursday nights."  Stop in to the Great Falls Fly Shop between 5 and 7pm and you just might find Josh filling out a few more slots in his collection.  Bring your vise if you want to participate. Join us for fly tying season and see if you can #outtiejosh.

Materials for such a venture are available at our Fly Shop and Online.
