Homesteading And The Small-Acreage Mindset: Find it at North 40’s Farmstock 2018

If you’ve considered building a small-scale farm and embracing the homesteading mindset—whether that means a few cows on an acre, or merely a couple chicken coops in the backyard—North 40 Outfitters’ Farmstock 2018 is the place to be.

That’s because, on March 10, we’re inviting local breeders, ranchers and farmers in to showcase their livestock and offer knowledge and suggestions at every North 40 Outfitters location in Montana, Idaho and Washington. Vendors may advertise their trades or sell their livestock while they teach people how to get started on their new adventure.

For those who may have attended previous Farmstock events, this version will set itself apart—we aim to educate and impassion our communities on the homesteading lifestyle, a way to be self-sufficient and actively engaged in raising and growing their own food. If you attend this year you’ll likely walk way with the tools and knowledge (and maybe a few chickens or lambs) to successfully start your own backyard homestead. This event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. local time, so be sure to get there during those hours!

Who’s invited to Farmstock 2018 at North 40 Outfitters?

We want to bring two groups of people together at Farmstock: the people with animals to sell and knowledge to give, and those who may want to begin with backyard homesteading.

What’s Different in 2018?

Prior incarnations of Farmstock consisted of an extra day of a farmer’s market with crafts, produce, local artisans and a few scattered people working with livestock and animals. This year, the focus shifts from crafts and produce sales to a focus on small-acreage homesteading. That means there is a range of animals on the market for purchase, including chickens, goats, sheep, llamas, bees and ducks, among others.

North 40 Outfitters was named in homage to the Homestead Act of 1862, and we want to facilitate that lifestyle and mentality for a modern audience.

If you are interested in raising your own food either for health reasons or because you’d just like to teach your family where food actually comes from, Farmstock is the place to be—come as a vendor and teach your community about the livestock you raise (and sell), or come as a consumer and pick up your first pair of laying hens or your family’s first sheep, and get started homesteading in 2018.
