Little Twin Lake Fishing Report 6.1.2017

Had a chance to make a run up to Little Twin Lake just south of Winthrop. I had been getting mixed reports about the lake so I thought I would check it out.

The day before we had a pretty big thunderstorm with a lot of rain, come through the valley and the temperature dropped about 20 degrees. I was skeptical about how fishing might be, but decided to give it a try anyway.

I noticed some shucks from damsel fly nymphs in and round the water's edge, but saw no nymph activity. There were blue adults buzzing around. I went ahead and tied on a size #10 damsel nymph and worked it just off the shoreline out to about 8 feet of water and had a couple of little shakers that popped off once I got them close to the boat.

I tried a few other colors and sizes in the damsel nymph selection I had in my box, but nothing to much more then I had already hooked into. Barbless hooks are nice when you get into the smaller fish, you don’t have to do anything other than put slack in the line to let the little buggers flip off.

You can select from our leeches online here.

I switched over to a UV black with a little red leech I tie up and kept fishing about the same distance as I had before. Couldn’t even get one of the 6" rainbows to show any interest. I moved out into deeper water and had a few halfhearted bumps but that was about it.

I figured I would give it one last try, so I tied on a #12 Pumpkin Head Leech and kept moving around the lake in a little deeper water. The take was anything less then crazy. My rod tip took a dive for the water as I held on.

A nice fat rainbow that looked to be about 18" came out of the water to give me a show then took a hard dive and with that my 5x tippet parted ways.

We've got tippet and leaders online right here.

I fished for about 20 more minutes with no more action, but that’s OK, I had the show I was looking for and called it good.

I should note that Big Twin Lake looks to have had a winter kill this year and fishing is a lot slower then it has been in past years. There is a aerator in the lake to keep an area ice free to prevent winter kills but it looks like it was not enough this year.

The lake did receive a stocking of rainbows a week or so ago. A number of jumbo size trout were released along with the smaller catchables.
