The Missouri Never Seems to Disappoint

I spent some time on the Missouri last week. Nice would be an understatement.

I watched this brown trout swim around what I assume is his home pool while I drank coffee. When I returned from fetching my camera, he was still there and didn’t care I was either. Especially because I wasn't bothering him with string and fake food. He cruised circles through his pool, seeing what there was to see.

I did my best to not disturb him.

I launched my boat and found some eagles. Lots of eagles on the Mo right now. Goldens and Balds both.

One fancied a whitefish.

I drifted into a cloud of 600 million tricos and found a pod. They liked a #20 trico spinner I found in the bottom of my boat bag. They did not like clunking around in the boat, standing over the top of them, and especially leaders dragging over their heads.

If you don't want to rely on "bottom of the boat bag" flies, you can get a whole bunch of patterns here.

A little further downstream, I climbed a rock to look into the river. I could see lots of fish. Browns, and a few rainbows too.

I'm back home now, away from the Mo, but I still find myself thinking about the river regularly. For those who haven't experienced the Missouri River, I highly recommend it. And for those of you lucky enough to be on it everyday, well you already know the feeling.

Visit Fred Telleen at the Great Falls Fly Shop, he can help you learn the Missouri. And a lot of other things for that matter. And if you need tricos, he can help with that too.

The weekend is nearly here, time to fish!

If you decide to bypass Fred, make sure to at least check out the current flows on the Mo before heading out.
