Missouri River Report 3.1.17

Between a busy schedule and wintry weather, my only fishing venture this past week consisted of 30 minutes down at Giant Springs. I caught a perch on my Spey Rod before deciding it was simply too cold and too windy to attempt a more impressive conquest.

Dave and Johnny ventured forth on a snowy day early this week and managed to nymph up a few fish. The usual suspects came out to play including the rainbow, the brown and the whitefish. They kept it simple with Firebead Pink Sows and Thunderbugs.

Good-Bye February

February is a somewhat cruel month for the open water angler. The weather shows glimmers of fishy goodness, but winter generally slams the door rather abruptly. March generally offers better prospects. As the days lengthen, wintry blasts typically pass quickly, followed by more and more fishy windows. By mid-month, we will be talking about Skwalla’s and baetis and big midge hatches. In a few short weeks, it will be full on fishing time again.

Why I like March

The water will begin warming this month and the fish will begin to eat more and more.

March is prime time for trout Spey. I like trout Spey.

March offers the first real dry fly prospects. The best Midge hatches of the year typically happen mid to late month.

Skwalla’s make an appearance in March. As the first big juicy bug of the season, they get trout and anglers all worked up. You should probably get some. Like right now.

Ice Out typically begins on the lower lakes. At some point this month, there is going to be some fantastic fishing for some really big trout. Better get some Balanced Leeches and Balanced Squirrels!
