What are the BEST Summertime socks for all around use? Smartwool Socks Review

I'm not sure when exactly the transformation occurred, but at some point in my life socks went from being something that "required a thank you card" to "the must have item of the holidays."

The reasons that drove such a transformation are highly debated, but regardless of how it happened, wrapping my feet in soft fluffy products rivals most of the other gifts that make their way down the chimney.

If you are in the market for some summer socks, then we've got a wide selection right here.

The Smartwool Hiking Medium Crew Sock

My most recent sock purchase was the Smartwool Hiking Medium Crew. I don't think it is necessary for me to divulge my "opening a new sock for the first time routine," just know that 1: I have such a routine, and 2: If you have not developed such a custom, I encourage you to do so.

Upon completing said tradition, the first thing I noticed about this pair of socks was the thickness. They weren't too thick, or too thin, but just right. Just how I like my childhood bedtime stories.

Thickness is an important feature for summer sockwear because they have to be able to accommodate a wide range of activities. I am an active guy whose activities vary greatly throughout the day, and I can't be changing socks with each change in activity.

Smartwool Versatility: Going the Distance

These socks were thin enough that I could wear them with my trendy designer loafers while biking to work; an important feature for a guy who feels that wearing trendy designer loafers while biking to work has value.

Conversely, when work ended, I made the last minute decision to go fishing for big hog brown trout on the Missouri River. During this activity, they were thick enough that my feet stayed warm while I waded into the darkness of night searching for the elusive brown beast (and that is a story for another day).

Or it's a story right here.

Fly Fishing in the Summer Smartwool Socks

Now, like all last minute fly fishing trips, the waders I had available to me were littered with holes, which brings me to my next point: material. These socks are wool, and wool is amazing for oh so many reasons. The first is that wool maintains its warmth even when wet, which is not true of its synthetic material counterpart.

Wool is also a natural antibacterial. Why is this important you ask? Because it allows you to wear, sweat, and repeat for days, yes days, without creating a smell that my dog has a strange obsession for, and fiancé strangely cringes over. There's a more, in-depth discussion of what makes merino wool so "expensive" right here.

In other words, the thickness and material of these socks enabled me to wear both trendy designer loafers and wading boots, while also enduring the diverse activities of daily bike rides, claustrophobic office meetings and impromptu fishing escapades, all the while without having to wash my socks for four straight days. You are welcome laundry basket.

A great summer sock, I think so. I'm heading down after work to purchase another pair, maybe I will see you there-
