An issue we hear a lot, and a style distinction we see everyday, is the contemporary round-toe versus square-toe cowboy boot debate.

When making their choices between the two some people claim it to be as simple as this: Are you fashion forward or retro classic.

Are you a Luke Bryan or a Chris LeDoux?

Have you been to a rodeo, country music concert, or farmers market lately? If so, you’ve probably noticed that all the people there aren’t your grandpa’s country folk, and they’re not wearing what he wore.

That’s because country has become trendy and, like anything else, these trends have changed our fashion... for better or worse.

A timeless piece of country attire is the cowboy boot. Although timeless, it hasn’t been immune to changes in fashion. We want to know, are you a fan of new boot trends or are you “classic country” when it comes to your footwear?

Bascially, are you a Luke Bryan or a Chris LeDoux?

Which pair of these men's cowboy boots or women's cowboy boots suit you?

How to decide between square-toe and round-toe cowboy boots

We asked the good people in our North-40 footwear departments to tell us what they’ve seen trending in western boots.

The number one answer: square-toe boots. Seemingly popular with a younger set, square-toe boots are in. Yet, they are not a new thing. Square toes have actually been around for a long time (think, throughout history). However, their current popularity has been going strong for at least the 10 years.

Why is that? Most trends, depending on the industry, last 30-40 years. And, square toe boots are what’s currently popular. So, in many ways, people are selecting square-toe simply for style. In addition to winning the popularity contest, however, square toe boots give the wearer more room for their toes.

So, if you’re looking for boots that give you more space in the toe box (functionality and comfort), and are currently in fashion (all about that style) square-toe boots are probably your thing.

You may be a Chris LeDoux if… you choose round toe cowboy boots

What if a square toe doesn’t look right to you? Maybe, you grew up with a round toe, instead, and that’s the look and feel you’re comfortable with. To you, a boot is not authentically western unless it has a western classic round toe. After all, round toes allow you to easily slide into stirrups. If this sounds more like you, and if you have to ask who Luke Bryan is, you may be a Chris LeDoux type and you’ll likely buy a pair of round-toe boots.

Square toe, or western classic round toe, there are valid arguments for both. Here’s what our customers have to say:

One thing everyone can agree on is this: regardless of which toe-style you choose, care and maintenance of boots is the important thing. And we can tell you how to care for either style so it lasts a long time.

In the end it’s up to you to choose a toe style. Which one are you? Square? Round? Luke, or Chris?
