Who is fishing the MO right now?

If you’ve been out there, this past week or so, you might have noticed there are still a few caddis around. Tan Hydropsyche. Maybe that’s why anglers are finding success swinging soft hackles.  Or maybe it’s all those emerging midges and pseudos and BWO’s.

Kevin Lyons has been getting his wife hooked up on Pink Lightning bugs.  Little ones.  He’s been catching his fish on tiny emergers like the Purple Donatello.  Terry Jenner’s been happy with the Last Chance Cripple.  There can be a prime dry fly hatch window from 1-3 pm-ish.

Fish are eating scuds.  This time of year they are at their largest size.  Think big scuds in the morning with your little midge or mayfly dropper.  Pink Ray Charles are working.  Skip the Fire Bead for now.  It will be on the menu soon enough.

If you find yourself on the water until evening, you just might hit a big midge hatch. There are great opportunities for fishing bugs on top

If you are wading, be aware that some brown trout spawning redds are forming.  If you see cleared areas of gravel, give them a fair berth.

Dan Soltau from Dirty Water Fly Company likes to probe the MO with some very creative streamers.  We’ve got some in our bins.  Check out this picture.  You might want some-

Streamer fishing is best early and late between the peaks of the bug activity.  Unless you want the really big ones.  Then you need to put it out there as soon as they get done digesting their last 6" meal.  Go big or go dry.  Good choices.

Wayne Jordan got a surprise while fishing the Sun River with a JJ Bugger this week.

Most people know there are Pike in the Sun.  I’ve never caught one where I trout fish, but Wayne has.  He said it had a belly full of trout.  Nice fish.  Wrong place.  He won’t be eating any more trout.

Ben is just learning to fly fish.  He is hooked.  He’s already rocking Simms G4 Waders and Airlock indicators.  He’s got the dial of the fun channel cranked way up.  That’s the whole point of this game we call fly fishing.  Hope you get out and get some.  If you need some motivation, join us for coffee and donuts on Saturday morning.  There might be some true fishing nuggets to glean between the BS fishing stories.
