A man holds a fish

Written by: Robert Patton

Any way you look at it, it's time spent on the water. I don't know that I can think of a time when, returning home from a day on the river, I thought to myself, "Today wasn't a good day!"  There is no such thing as a bad day if you're a fisherman.

Fishing isn't something that I grew up with.  Rather, it is something that I grew in to.  Both of my grandfathers were fly fishermen, but by the time I was old enough to go along, they had given up the sport.  My father was never much for fishing, other than to satisfy my nagging a few times a year.

Generational Fishing: Fishing Lures to Target Walleye

My Uncle Bob was really who taught me what fishing was all about.  I would jump at every chance I had to go out with him on his boat, or to go camping with him on the Tenderfoot.  It was under his tutelage that I really began to develop the passion that I now have for the sport of fishing.

My cousin Brock, Bob's oldest, and I have been fishing together for the past 16 years or so.  It has only been in the past 4 years that we have really learned to target walleye and catch them on purpose.

Most of our success has come from fishing Lake Elwell (or Tiber Reservoir as it's most commonly called), but the driving force of our pursuit of walleye still comes from fishing the Missouri below Morony Dam.

Buying and Using the Berkley Flicker Shad Fishing Lure

It is strange to think that the use of a single lure could truly be called a "game changer," but that sure was the case for us. I gave Brock a Flicker Shad Red Tiger #5 as a stocking stuffer on the advice from one of our fishing guys as a "good river lure."

Brock finally broke it out of the packaging after carrying it around in his tackle box for several months, and it has been game-on ever since.

It became a running joke for the next two summers that the Red Tiger strikes again.  We've caught just about every species in the river that will hit a lure; rainbows, browns, small mouth, pike, goldeyes, and of course walleye!

The Flicker Shad Red Tiger Strikes Again--Big Fish, Consistently

That revelation was our light bulb moment. We began using several of the other Flicker Shad patterns, as well as other crawdad patterns from Rapala.

Our success rate climbed exponentially, and it let us begin to explore the finer points of targeting walleye.

While we now use several other styles and patterns of crank baits, after fishing through a hole with little or no success, one of us will inevitably string up a Red Tiger - and most times bring up a couple good fish with it!  In the course of a summer, we went from calling two walleye "a good day," to calling two walleye "a good start."

Every year brings new challenges, but there are still a few places that seem to hold good fish no matter what the conditions are--got a pencil ready?

Holes like Old Reliable, The Wall, and Rattlesnake Bend can't be found on any map, but you can bet that if you see us on the river, that's where we're headed to - admittedly, my rod probably has a Red Tiger ready to go.
