Omak Lake Report 10.3.16

With apple harvest still going strong, I knew Luke had not had much time to hit the water of late. Last time I saw him, he was looking like he was in need of some fishing time. After checking the weather forecast for Sunday, I called Luke and asked if he was up for some time on the water. He told me, "I'll see you in the morning, I'll bring the boat."

We hit the lake at about 10:30 in the morning. The weather forecast said little to no wind, well that was almost true. We ran down lake, but as we did the wind picked up and proved too much for us. Once we got closer to the north end, it was a lot more pleasant.

We started out with the bigger streamer patterns that normally work for us. The action was okay, but the takes were of a half-hearted effort by the fish. We dropped the size of our streamers and start to get more positive action from the Lahontan cutthroats. We did have a few moments when we had some real hogs follow our fly up to the boat.

I was still not sold on this action, I knew we had not tried the right fly yet. I dug out a chartreuse dragon fly nymph in a size #8 and gave it a shot. That did the trick, the fish we on it real quick. I figured if they are hitting that bug I bet the new TFP Balanced Leech in chart/olive would work to. It did, boy did it work.

By late afternoon, we call it a day and headed in. As we were approaching the boat ramp, Luke cut the motor and grabbed his rod. He had spotted a couple of very large fish holding in about 6 feet of water. He fired off a cast toward them and one of them came at his fly. We could see it take the Smoke N' Mirrors, but it was a short take. It had only grabbed the tail of the fly and before it could take more of it, Luke was a little quick on the hook set. We noticed of the fish cruising the shallow waters, but none would commit to Luke's fly.

Overall, we both agreed it was a good day to be on the green waters of Omak Lake.

A quick list of the flies that were getting some action is, Barely Legal in grey, Peanut Envy in olive, Tak's Mini Minnow and a Small Fry.

One other thing, I should mention that was a bit surprising to us was the water temperature. It was holding right around 60 degrees. That might explain why the fish were not quite on the hard bite. That will change as fall temps drop more.
