Hey guys, Ken here with North 40 Outfitters, Lead Archery Tech at our West Great Falls location. Today, I'm going to talk about index style releases. So, there's a couple of different styles that different companies make. This one here is probably the most popular. This is a TruFire Smoke Foldback. And this is a dual caliper, so that means both those jaws move at the same time. And then with this style of trigger that's on here as you pull the trigger, the jaws open. You let go, the jaws close. So, for a lot of beginners or just people who struggle to get the release on the D loop, this is a really nice option. It's a lot, it's a very user-friendly option for people.

What are the Benefits of a Dual versus a Single Caliper Release?

Along the same lines, you have this dual caliper from Scott. This is the Scott Shark, and you have, you can see like you have to push the trigger forward to close those jaws. This works on actual sear, so it's more like a gun trigger where you add enough pressure and eventually, on the pressure, it just opens up on its own. So, this is for people who want just a little bit more sensitive trigger. They enjoy the feel of that. This is a really good option for them.

Another option that is out there is the single caliper release. So with this one, one hook opens the other jaw stays stationary, and the idea behind this one is that with the dual calipers, they both open. And so, with both opening, it's the argument is does one open faster than the other? And that can cause some left/right issues. And the thought process behind a single caliper is that it'll consistently feed out the same way. So it should show a little bit more consistency whether or not most people will see that.

How Fast do Hook Style Releases Wear Out your D Loop?

They're both super popular and both tune really well. It's more of a preference thing, I think more than anything. But, this is also similar to that TruFire that we have where you pull the trigger the jaw opens. And then this will also wear out your D loop a little slower than a dual caliper. The D loop tries to shove itself through the jaws of a dual caliper release, this one just won't wear out that D loop quite as quickly. And then the one that wears out your D loop, probably the slowest, is the hook style release. And with this release you just have it locked in place so you can see if it wasn't locked in place, that's how it would look. You just click that back in. But a lot of hunters really like this because they cannot have to look down at their bow and they can just kind of feel it onto their D loop. Then just pull straight back and shoot. And then when you shoot, that opens up, unlocks, and the D loop just comes feeding it. Just rolls right out of the way of the D loop and your arrow goes on its way.
