Hi, I'm Michelle with Gallagher Animal Management and today we'll be discussing what type of electric fencing you would want in the forest or back country.

How do I decide which type of electric fence to use on my camping trip?

There are a few things to consider when you're looking at electric fencing for hiking or packing in. There are going to be different regulations for different purposes, whether you're just hiking and camping or if you're going to be having food storage behind that line. If you are hiking in the forest and you're going to be camping overnight, you can get away with a lower Joule energizer such as a B11 or a 0.1 joule. If you are going to be doing any type of food storage behind an electric fence, it is required by the IGBC that you have a 0.7 joule or larger.

What requirements do I need to meet for electric fencing in the backcountry?

The IGBC is an agency that researches and manages grizzly bear populations in the Northwest. When picking out your fencing system for packing in for bears, there are a few things that you need to look for. The size of the energizer that you're going to need, and then the type of conduct or wire. It is required that you have a turbo wire, which is a nine strand wire for conductivity purposes to ensure that the energizer is working properly. Thanks for watching.
